Abstract

English as an international language is used by people not only for communicating to other people who come from different countries but also for providing a source of knowledge. Teaching English at vocational schools is challenging. It should refer to the program of study of students who are being taught. The English teachers of vocational schools have to teach about the language of English that is closely related to the students major of study. The teachers also need to select the appropriate materials based on the students' needs. By selecting the appropriate materials, it will help the teacher get the appropriate response from the students. The purposes of this study were: (1) To know the materials used in teaching English for Specific Purposes, (2) To know the problems faced by teacher in teaching the materials of English for Specific Purposes, (3) To find out the solution to the problems faced by teacher in teaching the materials of English for Specific Purposes used by the tenth grade teachers of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. This study used a descriptive research design because the writer gained the information concerning the phenomena that happened. The research subject was an English teacher who taught Computer and Network Engineering class at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. To collect the data, the writer used document analyses and interview. Then, the result of this study would be described in the form of descriptive essay. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that the materials which were used by the teacher were presented in four skills. There were: (1) Speaking materials which were introduction and greetings, (2) Writing materials which is describing people, (3) Reading materials which was telling about friends, and (4) Listening materials which were listen to the dialogue and practice it with the friend. Besides, in teaching those materials, several problems were faced by teacher such as (1) The student felt bored on some materials, (2) The students made the class noisy by talking to their classmates, (3) The students' ability in English was still low, and (4) The lack of facilities in the school. Moreover, the researcher also found the teachers' solution to solve the problems, namely the teacher have to be more creative in teaching the materials, the teacher reprimanded the students who made conversation in class, the teacher gives motivation to the students, and the teacher must be creative in using facilities in the school. In short, the materials of English that were being taught by teacher did not provide the students with all their needs.
