Abstract

Keyword : Method, Teaching grammar. Method is one component of teaching learning process. It offers the teachers alternative to make the students better in their learning activities. Because of the method, the teacher would be able to transfer information more easily, select the resources and define the roles of students. The research was done to find out the methods used by the English teacher in teaching grammar and how the English teacher appliedthe methods. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative design to analyze the data. The subject of this research were two of the English teachers at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The instrument of this research were non participant observation and semi-structured interview. The result of this research shows that there were two methods used by English teachers in teaching English grammar.They were Grammar Translation Methodand Direct Method. InGrammar Translation Method, the English teacher helped the students toable to write a paragraph about descriptive text using present tense through translating the text, made the students understand through correcting the grammar oftheirparagraphbytranslatingand asked the students to find out the difficult wordsof the text and discussed the paragraph that they presented by translation. By Direct Method, the English teacher trained the students to make and practice the conversation, asked the students to understand the text through discussing the answer of the questions, grammar and difficult words.
