Abstract

Keyword : Media, Teaching English Media can be very beneficial for teaching English language skills. Media can assist the teachers to communicate or explain their materials clearly. Media can also facilitate the students to increase their understanding of the materials. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to pick up the appropriate media based on the learning materials and to make the class more interesting. The aim of this research was to analyze and describe the kinds of media used by the English teacher in the teaching and learning process, the problems faced by the teacher in using media in teaching English, the teacherÂ’s solution of problems in using media in teaching English at SMA PANJURA Malang. In this study, the researcher used qualitative research design to describe the phenomenon in English class. She used qualitative research design because she observed the phenomenon naturally. The data of this research were collected from the class observation and interview with the English teacher. In addition, the data were displayed in the form of narrative. The result of observation and interview showed that the English teacher used four media in teaching English, namely whiteboard, textbook, power point, and internet. Those media were used by the teacher in order to make the students understand the lesson better and to make the class more interesting. However, there were some problems faced by the teacher in implementing the media such as: the ink ran out, the limited number of the textbooks, the limited number of LCD in the class, the unorganized schedule of LCD room, and the WI-FI connection did not cover all school area. Furthermore, the teacher had some ways to solve those problems, namely: bringing her own marker, asking one of the students to fulfill the ink, making a small group discussion, asking students to write down the result of the discussion, asking another teacher to exchange classes and let the first user use the room, asking the students to buy Indieeschool card, and asking the students to use their own data connection.
