Abstract

Testing reading subject is very useful for the teachers. It can help them to know the ability of their students, how far the students can comprehend and understand the material given. In giving test, it is important for the teacher to choose the testing techniques which are appropriate with the class situation because each class has different characteristics of the students. This research was conducted to know the testing techniques of teaching reading used by the English teacher of the first year at SMP Negeri 3 batu in academic year 2007/2008 only. The statements of problems were: 1) what are the testing techniques used by English teacher of the first year at SMP Negeri 3 Batu on reading subject? 2) What are the strengths and the weaknesses of those techniques according to the teacher? The research design used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The research subject was one English teacher of the first year at SMP Negeri 3 Batu. The research instruments were interview and document. The result of the research showed that in testing reading, the English teacher used techniques as follows; true-false, completion, multiple-choice, and simple question (short answer). The technique that most often used by the teacher was multiple-choice technique. According to the teacher each technique used has its own strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes, the teacher gave test by turns; half of the students did test in classroom, while half of them were waiting outside for their turns. The researcher expected that the result of this research would be useful for the teacher and further researchers. It was suggested for the teacher to keep on applying completion, multiple-choice and simple question techniques because they can stimulate the understanding and thinking skill of the students. It is also expected that this research can be a consideration for further researchers who want to conduct research related to testing techniques of reading.
