Abstract

For the English teacher especially, recognizing the student’s learning style is very important before determining which teaching techniques and learning strategies the teacher applied. Nowadays, the students are digital native learners, because they are the “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet (Prensky: 2001). This study tries to investigate two research problems: What kinds of learning style used by digital native learners? and What the dominant learning style used by digital native learners? This study design is descriptive quantitative that constitutes a numerical method of describing observation of material or characteristic. The population of this research are the first grade of the students of SMP N 2 Sukapura, Probolinggo. The researcher use purposive sampling to determine the sample from three parallel classes. Its instrument to get the data is questionnaire and observation. Then, the gathered data are analyzed by using descriptive after grouping based on their style preference. This research finds out four kinds of learning style used by digital native learners at SMP N 2 Sukapura, Probolinggo. It is identified that 12.12% or 4 students chose visual learning style, 24.24% or 8 students chose auditory learning style, 48.49% or 16 students chose kinesthetic learning style and 15.15 % or 5 students chose individual learning style. Thus, the dominant learning style that employed by digital native learners at SMP N 2 Sukapura is kinesthetic learning style.
