Abstract

The teaching of English in the primary level gives some advantages to young children. Young English learners tend to learn a language easily, especially as far as oral skill is concerned. In English DepartmentÂ’s curriculum at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang, there are three elective courses that must be chosen by the students; one of them is English for Young Learner (EYL). EYL is prepared for students who are interested in teaching children. In learning process, the practice teacher should prepare lesson plan and media. Lesson plan makes the students easier in teaching practice. Meanwhile, media is one of factors important to make the students interested in studying English. Therefore, the goal of this research is to find out (1) the relevance between lesson plan and media used by practice teachers in teaching English to young learners at UMM and (2) the problems faced by the practice teachers in implementing the media based on the lesson plan in teaching English to young learners at UMM. The subjects of this research were the practice teachers in the third grade of EYL course, academic year 2010-2011. They were chosen because they were all in the seventh semester and had already taken education subjects. Besides, they had already taken EYL I subject which was prepared to teach EYL practically. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The data were collected by observing the teaching activity, interviewing the practice teacher, and analyzing the documentary data. The result of the data analysis showed that the practice teachers used all the media which were relevant with lesson plan. But, they only faced obstacle in implementing the media. From the observation, the researcher found that the practice teachers did not prepare well. Besides, they did not master well the material by using the media. Moreover, from the interview, the practice teacher said that giving instruction to the students in simple language was difficult, especially when they gave instruction how to play a game using media. Besides, the disruptive behavior from the students made the practice teachers could not manage the class well. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the practice teachers could not use accurate simple language in teaching using media, could not manage the teaching and learning activity well, could not distribute the time allotment. They lack the required skills in teaching the lesson by using media and did not prepare the teaching aids based on the need of they lesson.
