Abstract

As the international language, English is very popular in the world. English takes an important role in communication. Besides, English is one of subjects taught at school in Indonesia. Students can learn English from kindergarten until University. It is learned by them not only in public and primary school but also in Pesantren area. MA Miftahul Ulum is one of Pondok Pesantren which is located in Sumenep. In this school, the teachers give more attention to the Islamic subject (kitab) than other subjects. The teachers hope their students become Islamic generation in the future. Automatically, it could influence the studentsÂ’ motivation in learning other subjects especially English subject. Therefore, the researcher wanted to investigate about (1) The second year studentsÂ’ motivation in learning English at MA Miftahul Ulum Pondok Pesantren Sumenep and (2) The second year studentsÂ’ dominant motivation in learning English at MA Miftahul Ulum Pondok Pesantren Sumenep. In this study, the researcher applied descriptive quantitative research because the researcher wanted to describe the phenomena of studentsÂ’ motivation in learning English. The population in this study was the second year students at MA Miftahul Ulum Pondok Pesantren Sumenep consisting two classes. The researcher took the population which consists of 57 students to be analyzed. So, it employed population research. Based on the analysis, there were (14%) students had very high motivation, there were (56%) students had high motivation and (30%) students had average motivation. Furthermore, based on the result of computation, it was found out that the mean score of studentsÂ’ motivation in the class XI was 3.52, it means that it was high motivation. It was also found the mean score of studentsÂ’ extrinsic motivation was 3.45 and studentsÂ’ intrinsic motivation was 3.59, it means that the mean score of intrinsic studentsÂ’ motivation was higher than extrinsic motivation.
