Abstract

Pronoun is a word used to replace of a noun. It means that, pronoun helps a speaker or writer present ideas clearly and efficiently. Some of students got difficulties in understanding and applying English structure especially in using pronoun. So, the researcher was interested in investigating the studentsÂ’ errors in using pronoun especially personal, demonstrative and interrogative pronouns. In this research, the researcher used descriptive quantitative research because it was aimed to describe of the errors type and counted the frequency of each errors in order to find out the dominant errors in using pronoun. The population of this research was all of the first grade students of MTs. Muhammadiyah 1 Malang consisted of two classes (A and B), which each classes consists of 24 students. The sample of this research was all of the students as sample since total population was less than 100, so this research used population research. The researcher used multiple choice tests as an instrument to collect the data, and to analyze the data was used percentage formula. Based on analyzing the data, it was found that number of errors made by the students in using pronoun was 318 errors. There were 28 (8.8%) errors of omission, it was divided into 12 (3.8%) were errors in omission of personal pronouns, and 16 (5%) were errors in omission of interrogative pronouns. Then, 68 (21.4%) errors of addition; it was divided into 56 (17.6%) were errors in addition of personal pronouns and 12 (3.8%) errors in addition of interrogative pronouns. The last, in errors of misformation 222 (69.8%), it was divided into 60 (18.9%) errors in misformation of personal pronouns, 114 (35.8%) were errors in misformation of demonstrative pronouns and 48 (15.1%) were errors in misformation of interrogative pronouns. So, the dominant errors that made by students were errors of misformation 222 (69.8%). It was divided into 60 (18.9%) were errors in misformation of personal pronouns, 114 (35.8%) were errors in misformation of demonstrative pronouns and 48 (15.1%) were errors in misformation of interrogative pronouns. It can be concluded that students of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang have difficulties in using pronoun, because they still made errors in using pronoun.
