Abstract

This study aimed at studying the studentsÂ’ learning style applied by the digital native students of the first semester at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Learning style is the way the students learn, it is the important factor in teaching learning process. Besides the knowledge of the students, learning style should be known by the teacher before determining the appropriate style in teaching. So the mismatch between studentsÂ’ learning style and teachersÂ’ teaching style can be avoided. Based on the statement above, the formulated problems were: 1. What kinds of learning style are applied by the digital native students in learning? 2. What styles are mostly applied by the digital native students? The research design used in this study was the combination of qualitative and quantitative. The population of this study was the first semester students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The sample of this study was 47 students which selected by using cluster sampling technique. The instrument used in this study was PLSPQ (Perceptual Learning Style Preferences Questionnaire). The result of this study showed that there were seven kinds of learning style applied by the digital native students of the first semester at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. They were visual, aural, verbal, physical, logical, social and solitary learning style. And the most dominant learning style applied by them was verbal learning style. The conclusion of this study is the digital native student of the first semester at University of Muhammadiyah Malang applied the different learning style in learning. It shows that the students learn English based on their own preference.
