Abstract

English is an International language. That is why English is one of important languages to be learned. One way to learn the language is by translating. Translating is the changes of the languages from a source language into a target language. Translation as a part of English language teaching should be done in a correct way. To make a good translation, the translator used strategies. There are two kinds of strategies, Semantic Strategy and Structural Strategy. This thesis focused on the strategies in translating English text into Indonesian used by sixth semester students. This study was conducted to know the students’ ability in translating English text into Indonesian and the strategies used by sixth semester students of the translation class of UMM in translating English text into Indonesian. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The research subject of this study was the sixth semester students of translation class of UMM. The number of the students were 63 students. The profile of the research subject of this study were 14 students that have good language skills. The participants have good average in the writing and reading skills. The average of all of scores are B. Their TOEFL score is 500. The result of this study showed that the students’ ability in translating English text into Indonesian was categorized in fair with the mean score 66,9. Based on the result of the analysis, 5 of students used Structural Strategy (18,5%) and 22 students used Semantic Strategy (81,5%).
