The population of this study was the second year students of SMPN 2 Batu. The total number of the population was 282 students. They consist of 8 classes, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H. in this research, the researcher took two classes as the sample of the study. Therefore, the researcher chose class F and H because both classes had the same English teacher and had similar competence. The instrument used to collect the data was pretest and post test, than the scores were calculated by using ANOVA formula. The result of the ANOVA computation showed that the value of F-Ratio was 13,866 and F-table value was 4,00. The data showed that the value of F-Ratio was greater than F-table. Therefore, the hypothesis stating that teaching writing using response journal writing strategy improves the students’ writing skill was accepted.
