Abstract

Media is very important in teaching learning process, because it can be used to increase and improve students’ ability in learning English. Generally, there are three kinds of instructional media, they are: visual, audio, and audiovisual media. Audiovisual media is one of the instructional media that can be heard and seen. By using audiovisual, the students do not only listen to what is said and taught by the teacher, but also see, notice, and feel it directly. Vocabulary is one of the important aspects of foreign language learning that the students should be master. Therefore, this study focuses on the use of audiovisual in teaching vocabulary at SDN Balongsari 5 Mojokerto. In conducting this study, the writer uses descriptive research design to know the use of multimedia in teaching vocabulary, teacher’s problem in using multimedia, and how the teacher solves those problems. The subject of this study is a teacher of English at SDN Balongsari 5 Mojokerto. The instruments that are used in this study are observation and interview. Observation was used to know the multimedia in teaching vocabulary. Interview was used to collect the data about the kinds of multimedia that used in teaching vocabulary, the problems faced by the teacher in using multimedia, and how the teacher solves those problems. The result of this study shows that the English teacher in SDN Balongsari 5 Mojokerto used the multimedia (computer and LCD) in teaching vocabulary. The LCD is one of the audiovisual media, which hardly used. The teacher’s problems in using multimedia media are: 1). the skill in using multimedia, 2). time allotment in preparing audiovisual especially multimedia (computer and LCD), 3). lack of facilities, such as speakers that can support the media. The problems can be overcome by attending some courses or training; by adding the facilities in the school especially audiovisual media.
