Abstract

In this globalization era in which communication takes an important role in world information, speaking as one of the important English skills that were regarded as the most important use of the target language learning because the objective of learning a foreign language is to use it in real communication. Further, strip story is one of the activities to promote speaking. Through strip story activities the students learn how to express ideas, opinions, or feeling to others by using words or sounds of articulation. Robert E. Gibson explained that strip stories are important in the communicative approach because they give learners an opportunity to practice communicating in social contexts and social roles. The purpose of this research is to find whether the implementation of strip-story as an alternative material which is able to increase students’ ability in speaking English fluently and orderly. The design of this research was classroom action research. The subject of this study is the eight grade students of class C of SMPN 11 Malang. The instrument used were test and observation. The writer conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles in which each cycles consisted of four elements: planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The result of data analysis showed that 36 students increased their speaking achievement and only 2 students had static achievement. The students felt happy and were more active and enjoyed studying English. The research result of pre-test is 59.19 and post-test is 84.25, which means that the students’ speaking skill increases after they were taught using picture strip story. So, the strip story was considered effective to increase the students’ ability to speak English fluently and orderly.
