Abstract

Vocabulary is an important element in studying a foreign language in order that learners are able to communicate in the target language. Learners will be able to master English either passive or active depending on the number of vocabularies in their mind. Realizing the importance of vocabulary mastery, English junior high school teachers should have special time allocation, technique and media for learning strategies. The objective of this study was to describe the teaching technique of vocabulary used by the teachers in teaching vocabulary at the eighth graders of SMP Negeri 13 Malang. The design of this study was descriptive design, because the researcher wanted to describe certain information concerning the current status of phenomena and determining the natural situation as it exists related to the problem, in this case, the teaching of vocabulary at eighth graders of SMP Negeri 13 Malang. The subjects of this study were two English teachers at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 13 Malang. In collecting the data, the researcher used two kinds of instruments: interview and observation. The finding showed that the teachers used visual technique, illustrative situation, mime and gesture, synonymy and definition, contrasts and opposites, scale, example of the type, translation, using a dictionary, asking others, and contextual guesswork.
