Abstract
Translating consists of reproducing in the receptor language, firstly in term of meaning and secondly in term of style. Phrasal verbs are compounds (often with idiomatic meaning) formed from a verb plus either a preposition or an adverb. From the research, the writer expected that the students know the mistake and can avoid and minimize the errors in translating phrasal verbs. The present study is intended to know the students' ability in translating phrasal verbs at the 6th semester of English Department students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In this study, the researcher used descriptive quantitative research design. The population was the 6th semester of English Department students of University of Muhamadiyah Malang. The total number was 233 students. The sample was 20% sample from total population that is about 50 students. The writer used simple random sampling by using lottery. From the lottery, it showed that 9 students from A class, 10 students from B class, 6 students from C class, 11 students from D class, 14 students from E class. The instrument used to collect the data was test. The tests were used to collect the data of students' ability in translating phrasal verbs. The result of test showed that 2% of the total sample got A, 4% of the students got B+, 8% of students got B, most of students got C+ (38%), 16% got C, and 30% of students got D, and 2% got E. It concluded that the students' ability at the 6th semester of English Department students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang was below average because the average score was 56.6.
