This study used descriptive qualitative research design because the writer described and interpreted the phenomena that existed in the novel without presenting numbers. She just analyzed the literary work itself without learning the author's life. The object of this study was Denise Robins' novel "The Strong Heart". The data were taken from quotations of paragraphs and dialogues that were presented in the novel. The result of this study showed that there were four causes of Clifford Patterson's love affair. They were: (1) Feeling under pressure because of a lot of rules, (2) Unsatisfied sex, (3) Boredom, and (4) Maureen's attractiveness. Then, there were two impacts of Clifford Patterson's love affair on himself. The first, he lost his job. The second, his engagement with Rose broke down and they were separated. Besides that, the impacts were also felt by Rose. She felt depression because she lost everything in her life.
