Abstract

Today, English is very important subject that must be provided for students to develop their skill. By applying some of techniques in teaching learning English vocabulary, it is hoped that students will be interested in learning English vocabulary. This study focuses on techniques teaching vocabulary used by the second grade teacher at SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau-Malng. The purposes of this study are: (1) to know the kinds of techniques used by the teacher in teaching vocabulary, (2) to know the ways of the English teacher applies the techniques in teaching vocabulary, and (3) to know what are the teacher’s reasons of using the techniques in teaching vocabulary. This study was a descriptive qualitative research because the researcher worked in a natural setting, it concerned with the process rather than outcomes and it described the facts of the subject. The subject in this research was the teacher who was teaching English vocabulary to the second grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau-Malang. The instruments in this study were interview for the English teacher in second grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Dau-Malang and observation of the teaching learning activity in classroom. The findings showed that the teacher applied five techniques in teaching and learning English vocabulary; (1) Using flashcard and pictures: showing colorful pictures in the classroom. (2) Using translation technique: helping the students translates the difficult words. (3) Using games technique: giving puzzle and connecting word game. (4) Using the guessing word technique: giving the new word that must be guess by the students. And (5) Using Word formation technique: giving unfamiliar word that relating affixes and roots to know prefixes and suffixes. Then, the teacher’s reasons of choosing those techniques were: (1) Using flashcard and pictures: teacher wants to know the students’ experience in pronouncing the word, so if any mistake the teacher gives the right pronunciation. (2) Using translation technique: the teacher wants to help the students to know the meaning of word. (3) Using games technique: the teacher wants to make the students more active and creative in the class. (4) Using the guessing word technique: the teacher wants to the students to find out the vocabulary. (5) Word formation technique: the teacher wants to the students can use prefixes or suffixes in the right context. The Advisor I, Dra.
