Abstract

Literature is anything written that use language in unique way. By reading literary works especially novel, the readers not only get enjoyment but also they will get new knowledge and experience about life that expresses in novel. In this study the writer choosed Peter Chambers’ novel "The Beautiful Golden Frame" as the subject of research and focused on main characters’ characteristics. The problems of this study were: (1) what were the characteristics of main characters found in Peter Chambers’ novel "The Beautiful Golden Frame"? (2) What were the effects of main characters’ characteristics to their life on Peter Chambers’ novel "The Beautiful Golden Frame"? This research used descriptive design because the writer tries to analyze the novel descriptively with emphasis on the main characters’ characteristics in "The Beautiful Golden frame" novel. In this study the writer used objective approach because the writer focused on the characteristics of two main characters. The writer did not need the author’s life, background of work, or influence of the work. The object of this study was the whole events in the novel "The Beautiful Golden Frame" written by Peter Chambers. The event could be in the form of paragraphs, dialogues, or quotations of the story that are presented by the author, especially the events, dialogues, or quotations which related to characteristics of main characters in novel "The Beautiful Golden Frame". The result of this study showed the characteristics of first main character, Bernard L. Rivers were conceited, liar, sly and reawakening. The characteris of second main character, Mark Preston were honest, hard worker, curious, brave, smart and calm. There were two effects of main characters’ characteristic, negative and positive. The characteristics of Bernard L.Rivers that gave negative effects were conceited, liar and sly. Those characteristics caused he had difficulty to build relationship with others and he must responsible for his negative action to the police. The positive effect is Bernard L.Rivers became rich and successful businessman because of his reawakening characteristic. Mark Preston characteristics that gave positive effect were honest, hard worker, curious, brave, smart and calm. Those characteristics made Mark Preston had good relationship with others and helped him to do his job well. Mark Preston curious characteristics gave negative effect for his life. It made him in a dangerous situation when he was doing his job.
