Abstract

Teaching English is different from teaching mother tongue, especially in RSBI class. In this class students and teachers use English in teaching learning process, therefore the RSBI students have to learn English lesson quicker than regular class. The English teacher in RSBI class must be creative and innovative to make the class become efficient, active, interesting. Therefore the teacher needs to use media. Based on the situation above, the researcher wants to know; (1) media are used for English subject on RSBI class at SMP N 1 Batu, (2) the way teacher applied those media and advantages and disadvantages of using those media. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research design, and subject of this study was the English teacher of seventh grade RSBI class at SMP N 1 Batu. To collect the data, the writer interviewed the teacher and did some observation. After collecting the data, the writer analyzed the data and classified based on the problem. The result of this study showed that (1) Media used by the teacher in English subject of RSBI class were: Visual Media: pictures, slide show, and real object. Audio Media: Language laboratory, and tape recorder. Audio visual Media: television and video player. (2) The teacher of RSBI class SMP N 1 Batu applied those media in teaching English were: a) Visual media: the teacher showed the explanation, pictures or examples in slideshow. Sometimes the teacher presented real things or real object as examples, to make the students understand the material well. b) Audio media: the teacher used audio media such as language laboratory and tape recorder. The teacher played cassettes related with material. While listening to the cassettes, the students made some notes or did the worksheets then the teacher asked the students to retell the material that had been listened and corrected the students’ pronunciations. c) Audio visual media: the teacher used audio visual media such as television and video player. The teacher played a video clip in television and asked the students to do their work sheets while watching the video clip. The teacher also asked the students to retell the song. (3) The advantages of using media were; helping in explaining material, the students understand the material easily, classroom activity more active and interesting, and presenting the material clearer. There were no disadvantages in using the media, media help the teacher in teaching English, therefore the teacher usually use the easier one or the media which already provided in school.
