Abstract

Learning Bahasa Indonesia for people of English speaking country is an interesting situation. However, they sometimes get some difficulties in comprehending those language components. There are many factors that might cause difficulties in learning Bahasa Indonesia. The difficulties they get can be in learning vocabulary, sentence and word structure, or in learning pronunciation of Bahasa Indonesia. This study was intended to know the difficulties faced by American Peace Corps volunteers coming to Indonesia and learning components of Bahasa Indonesia. Besides, the purpose of this study is to explore and describe the difficulties in learning Bahasa Indonesia, especially in leaning language components. The research design used in this study was descriptive qualitative because the researcher wanted to explore, describe and know more about the difficulties Americans get. The population of this study was 19 volunteers of four clusters, Junrejo, Tlekung, Pandanrejo, Giripurno, of American Peace Corps who stayed in Batu, Malang East Java. The sample was Junrejo cluster containing five volunteers. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview and observation. The findings showed that the volunteers’ difficulties in vocabulary were difficult to memorize words added by affixes that change the words’ meaning. They also felt that there are a lot of synonyms in Bahasa Indonesia making them difficult and confuse to choose the appropriate word to use in daily speaking. Furthermore, they were also difficult to pronounce words containing the sounds ng,r and ny. In learning sentence structure, constructing the words into a good sentence of Bahasa Indonesia became difficult due to the different pattern between Bahasa Indonesia and English.
