Abstract

Literature Circle is one of Cooperative Learning techniques that reduces racial conflict among school children, promotes better learning, increases students’ motivation, and improves their comprehension test. Every member in Literature Circle groups is forced to be active. There were many researchers who used Literature Circle technique on some subjects, like speaking, listening, writing, etc. Therefore, the researcher wants to know whether or not Literature Circle technique can increase students’ ability in reading comprehension. This study used experimental research design especially quasi experimental design to both control and experiment group to gather the data. The data were taken from the pretest and posttest scores. The population in this study was second year students of SMPN 3 Batu consisting of eight classes. The researcher took one class. One of the groups was given treatment (experimental groups) and the other was not (control groups). At the first meeting the subjects were given the pretest. They were asked to write a paragraph based on the reading. After the treatment, the students were given the posttest which is different from pretest reading text. The data were calculated by using ANOVA and it showed that the value of F-ratio was -26.95 and the level of significance was 0.05 while the degree of freedom was 28 and the F-table value was 4.20. The data showed that the value of F- ratio was less than the F-table. In conclusion, this Literature Circle technique is not significantly used to teach reading comprehension at SMPN 3 Batu.
