Abstract

Prefix is often used to form new words or change the words qualities. In detail, to change the words qualities we should know the appropriate prefix. It is possible to have mistakes without knowing the right formation. Wilde (2006) found that a set of 20 prefixes and 14 roots, and knowing how to use them will unlock the meaning of over 100.000 words. It means that by knowing how to use language will bring many advantages in the students studies. In detail, by knowing prefixes the students will be able to know the meaning of the words and recognize whether it is adjective or verb. On the other hand, based on the consideration above, it is important to analyze the type of mistake made by the third semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang in using prefixes on changing words into negative qualities. This study used a descriptive quantitative research design because it was aimed at describing the type of mistake in each aspect of prefixes and determining the most frequent and the least mistake based on the prefixes. The population of this study was the third semester students and 43 students from class E were taken as sample using cluster random sampling. The data of this study were students’ mistake in using prefixes in changing words into negative qualities. Based on the analysis, it was found that the number of mistakes made by 41 students in employing negative prefixes was 545 mistakes. The frequent error was in negative prefix un-(40.73%), which was divided into 40.18% of misformation mistake and 0.55% of Spelling mistake. Based on the calculation, it was found that the least mistake was in prefix mis- (2.57%), which was divided into 2.02% of misformation mistake and 0.55% of pronunciation mistake. In conclusion, the students can be considered have difficulty in choosing the appropriate prefix for changing the words into negative qualities and on their understanding that prefix un- can change all words qualities. It is hoped that the teachers will use those findings in their teaching and learning of English in order that the students mistake can be minimized.
