Abstract

National examination (UN) is the way of Indonesian government to know the students’ skill in mastering the lessons. UN becomes the problem for students. So, motivation is needed by students to face UN because motivation can increase the activity to study. Without motivation, the students do not have spirit to study. Therefore, the researcher wants to investigate about (1) the students’ motivation to prepare for national examination at SMA Negeri 2 Batu, and (2) what the students do to motivate themselves in preparing for national examination at SMA Negeri 2 Batu. In this study, the researcher applied descriptive research because the researcher wants to describe the phenomena of students’ motivation and to get information about what the students do to motivate themselves in preparing for UN. The population in this study was the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Batu consisting of six classes. The researcher used cluster random sampling and took XII IPS 1 which consists of 36 students. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found out that 3 students (8.3%) had very high motivation, 25 (69.4%) students had high motivation, 6 students (16.7%) had average motivation, 1 student (2.8%) had low motivation, and 1 student (2.8%) had very low motivation. Based on the result of compotation of mean score, it was found out that the students got the mean score of 69.6. It means that their motivation to prepare for national examination was high. Besides, the mean of extrinsic score (35.1) more dominant than intrinsic score (34.5). Some ways that were by students to motivate themselves in preparing for national examination was found. First, studying hard was done by the students to preparing for UN. Second, the students always prayed. Third, the cram and try out program were followed. Fourth, the students discussed about the lessons with other friends.
