Abstract

English is a language mostly learned by people around the world. In learning a foreign language, there are four skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing. One aspect which is very important in communication is speaking. However, in a process of language learning the students have often faced some difficulties. The difficulties in learning speaking can divided into linguistic and non-linguistic difficulties. This study was intended to know the linguistic and non-linguistic difficulties faced by the eight grade students in English conversation as a local content material in SMP Negeri 1 Jetis Mojokerto. The writer used descriptive qualitative research design in this study. In collecting the data, the writer used questionnaire and observation. Moreover, the population was the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Jetis Mojokerto. The total of number population was 256 students. The writer took 25% from 256 students, so there were 64 students as the respondents. The findings showed that the students got linguistic difficulties in pronunciation (65.6%), vocabulary (61.0%), and grammar (49.2%). It means that the students got major difficulties in all aspects of linguistic difficulties. Then, non-linguistic difficulties were first, the students got difficulties related to the topic of industries materials because the topic was not attractive and suitable for their needs. Second, almost all of the students mixed English, Javanese, and Indonesian in the class. Third, the students’ showed little participation in the class, it was because they got difficulty in speaking English with their friends. Fourth, in practicing a dialogue the students could not keep their eye contact, maintain the expression, and look after their intonation. And the last was that the teacher only relied on LKS and dictionary for teaching learning activity. She never used teaching media like TV, Video, OHP, etc., and the English laboratory had incomplete facilities.
