Abstract

The researcher was interested in knowing the ability of the first grade students at Senior High School 2 Batu in finding the generic structure of narrative text. Narrative text is one of the texts which is important to be taught and learnt by the students. They have to understand and comprehend about narrative text. The students’ understanding and comprehension in narrative text make them know when they are asked to find and describe the generic structure. Even though finding the generic structure is easy, it still needs students’ carefulness to do describe the generic structure because sometimes students still cannot find the true generic structure. Considering the importance of finding the generic structure in narrative text, this study is intended to measure the ability of the first grade students at Senior High School 2 Batu in finding the generic structure of narrative text. The research design of this study was descriptive quantitative research because the data were analyzed and described in numerical forms. The research population in this study was the first grade students of SMAN 2 Batu. The total number of population was 228 students who were divided into 6 classes (I.1-I.6). The writer applied cluster sampling randomly and took 30 students in first-six ( I.6) for the sample. The instrument of this study was test and it was conducted on December 8th 2010. The result of this research showed that 11 students (37%) got score (80-100) and classified into excellent. Then, 13 students (43%) got score (70-79) and classified into good, 2 students (7%) got score (60-69) and classified into fair. Next, 3 students (13%) got score (50-59) and classified into poor. The last, 1 student (3%) got score (0-49) and classified into very poor. The result of data analysis showed that the mean score was 74.73, which indicated the ability of the first grade students at Senior High School 2 Batu in finding the generic that structure of narrative text was good.
