Abstract

This research tried to know the ability of the 8th grade students of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang in understanding descriptive text. The design used in this study was descriptive quantitative research design because the researcher wanted to describe the students’ ability and the frequency of the ability by using objective measurement and statistical analysis of numeric data. The population in this study was limited to the eighth grade students of MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang in the 2009/2010 academic year consisting of three classes (75 students). The sampling technique used here was simple cluster sampling and all of the students of C class were taken as the sample. The instrument applied was a test on the use descriptive text. This instrument was tried out first to the eighth grade students of MTs Muahammadiyah 1 Malang who were not included in the sample. The result of the tried out showed that, the instrument used by the researcher was reliable. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was found that the students` score in understanding descriptive text was fair. The result showed that the average score was 62.8. Based on Arikunto, if the score range was in 56- 65, it could be classified into fair. In detail, from 25 students, there was no student or 0% whose score was in range 80- 100 that could be categorized as excellent. There was no student too or 0% whose score was in range 30- 39 that was categorized failed. There were 10 students or 40% whose score ranged 66-79 that was classified into good. There were 8 students or 32% who got score ranged 56- 65 that was classified into fair. There were 7 students or 28% whose score ranged 40- 55, who were categorized poor.
