Writing is one of the major skills for communication that the students have difficulties in. there are many students face many problems while writing in English. This study was conducted to identify the linguistic problems faced by the students in Writing 3 class of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The writer took the Writing 3 students because they had already learnt basic writing skill before. In conducting the research, the writer used a descriptive qualitative design to obtain the information related to linguistic problems in writing composition. The subjects of the study were 21 students who took Writing 3 class. The writer chose a class considering the students were heterogeneous entry level. The main instrument used to collect the data was document of Writing 3 assignment given by the lecturer. Finally, the data was analyzed descriptively. The result of the study showed that the students of Writing 3 class encountered linguistic problems in composing English paragraph. The problems include all the elements of linguistic factors such as, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and punctuation. The dominant linguistic problem faced by the Writing 3 students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang was grammar, especially in subject verb agreement.
