Abstract

The purposes of this study were to know the methods of teaching speaking implemented at Foreign Language Development Institution (FLDI), the method which was mostly used in teaching speaking at Foreign Language Development Institution (FLDI) and the way the teachers implemented the mostly selected method. This research used descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this research were one teacher and the 85 elementary students of Foreign Language Development Institution (FLDI). In collecting the data, the researcher used non-participant observation and unstructured interview as the instruments. Next, the data from four observations and interview were gathered and analyzed. Based on the research findings, there were at least three methods implemented in teaching speaking at Foreign Language Development Institution (FLDI). They were Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Audio-lingual Method (ADM) and Cooperative Language Learning (CLL). The Communicative Language Teaching was the mostly implemented method in that institution. In solving the problem which emerged during the implementation of CLT, the teacher ordered the students to discuss with the other students sitting next to them. CLT were often carried out by students in small groups. Small numbers of student interaction was favored in order to maximize the time allocated to each student for communicating.
