Abstract

Literature is always interesting to be discussed because it is related to real life. The main function of literature is to satisfy the readers or audience and bring them into their thought through literary works. Literary works could be in the form of poem, novel, drama, or film. The writer analyzed a film because film can be enjoyed audio visually. The researcher chose "Freedom Writer" film to be analyzed because it is based on the true story or factual event which happened in room 203. In order to analyze "Freedom Writer" film, the researcher has three problems to be explained. The problems are: (1) Why did Erin Gruwell struggle to get unity of the students? (2) How did Erin Gruwell struggle to get unity of the students? (3) How was the effect of Erin Gruwell’s struggle to the students?. This analysis is focused on the struggle to get unity of the students found in "Freedom Writer" film. This research applied descriptive qualitative by collecting the data and reviewing literature which are relevant to the topic to prove research data. The technique of this research is library research, meanwhile, the data are taken from the film itself. The approach used in this research is an objective approach because the researcher is not necessary to study the background of the writer, or when he or she starts to write stories. The finding of this analysis is shown by Erin Gruwell’s struggle which is based on two major reasons. First is the students’ involvement to the gang member which made them disrespecting others, and second is the racial tension among the students. Therefore, Erin Gruwell did many ways to solve the condition. The ways were playing 2Pac Shakur’s song, giving explanation about racist picture, playing a "Line Game" and giving them a journal book, giving reading books, field trip and dinner together with holocaust survivor, and the last was money raising in order to invite Miep Gies. As a result, Erin Gruwell’s struggle showed good progress on uniting the students. The unity of the students showed when the feeling of togetherness and the feeling of one family appeared among the students and finally, the students demanded to have a same class again in senior class.
