Abstract
Motivation became one of the determiner factors that affected the students’ ability because motivation encouraged them to empower their energy in improving their ability. Therefore, to increase the ability, the students had to have motivation before they began to learn. By having motivation, students would be easily to determine something that appropriate with their expectation and they were motivated to engage action intensely. The researcher took 29 English students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang academic year 2007-2008 who chose translation course as their elective course. The researcher used questionnaire to get the data about students’ motivation and used test to get the data about students’ ability in translating English narrative text. Furthermore, the obtained result was measured by using coefficient correlation Pearson Product Moment, because the writer wanted to find the correlation between two variables based on the mean score each variable. The result of study showed that there was moderate correlation between students’ motivation in choosing translation and their ability in translating English narrative text. It was proved by finding of coefficient correlation (r = 0.551) and the correlation was moderate in which r-score between 0.41 and 0.60. It shows that students who had high motivation, also had high ability in translating English narrative text and on the contrary students who had low motivation in choosing translation, also had poor ability in translating English narrative text. Therefore, it was expected, the lecturers have to be able to give more motivation for the students by making the learning seems worthwhile, so the students would be motivated to study.
