Abstract

Strategy is one of important aspects that teachers should consider in teaching learning activity in order to overcome some of problems that students face, especially in reading comprehension. By applying some of strategies in teaching learning reading comprehension, it is hoped that students will be interested in learning reading comprehension. This study is intended to explain an application of PQ4R strategy in teaching reading comprehension at MTsN Malang I, to know how the students’ response toward this strategy and to explain what the strenghts and weaknesses of this strategy are. This study was a descriptive qualitative research because the researcher worked in a natural setting, it concerned with the process rather than outcomes and it described the facts of the subject. The subject in this research was the teacher who was teaching reading comprehension in class G Bilingual of the second year students at MTsN Malang I. The instruments in this study were interview for the English teacher in class G Bilingual of the second year students at MTsN Malang I and observation of the teaching learning activity in class. The finding showed that the teacher applied this strategy by doing different activities; (1) Preview: giving general questions and information, (2) Question: giving questions based on the topic, (3) Read: arranging jumble sentences, read, and found main idea and unknown vocabulary, (4) Reflect: finding others information or examples, (5) Recite: discussing the text in front of class and did question- answer, (6) Review: giving questions based on the topic which had been discussing. Then, the students’ respond in this strategy were; (1) Preview: paying attention to answer the teacher’s questions, (2) Question: answering the teacher’s questions easily, (3) Read: having motivation to read seriously, found main idea and unknown vocabulary, (4) Reflect: thinking actively to find out others information, (5) Recite: discussing the text enthusiastically and excited for doing question- answer, (6) Review: answering questions easily. Furthermore, the strenghts of this strategy were making the students process the information of the text deeply, improving their speaking ability, and understanding the text easily. Needed a long time for applying this strategy was to be the weakness of this strategy.
