Abstract
Keywords: problems in translation, translation, linguistic problem This research aims at studying problems faced by the translation students of English Department when they translate complex subjects, separated verbs, separation between verbs and objects, complex objects, complex adverbs, compound-complex sentences, idioms, clippings, and acronyms. This research was descriptive research. The population of the study was the students who took Translation II as an optional subject. To collect the data, this study used a translation test. The material of the test was taken from the general English text in order that the nine aspects being the main concern in this research were inherent to be selected sentences to be translated into Bahasa Indonesia by the students. The results of the research showed that in translating a complex subject, a separated verb, separation between a verb and an object, a complex object, a complex adverb, a compound-complex sentence, an idiom, a clipping, and an acronym, the students found some problems. They were unable to identify the head of the phrase, unable to identify the part of verb separated, unable to identify the object separated from its verb, unable to identify the verb of the subject, unable to translate some words into TL with the closest meaning. In addition, they translated a negative conjunction into a positive meaning in TL, translated an idiom literally, considered a clipping as a root word, and translated an acronym into TL with the same as its source.
