Abstract
At SLTP Terbuka the teaching and learning process is done in distance. Therefore, the students have to do independent study actively. Students with learning problems are identified with a variety of labels, such as economically disadvantaged. Many low socioeconomic status parents have poor reading skills and so it can provide only few early reading experiences for their children. So they may not be capable of helping their children with assigned school work especially in English reading. The main objective of this study is that the researcher wants to investigate the students’ problems in learning English especially reading and their efforts to solve the problems. The design of this study is descriptive research. The population of this study is all of the students at SLTP Terbuka Plosoklaten Kediri. Because in this research all the population is investigated, population sample is applied. The total number of population are thirty-three students. The instruments that are used in this study are interview, observation, and questionnaire. After the researcher collects and analyzes the data, it was found that the students’ problems in learning English especially reading are: the students did not interested in English reading (60.6%), they did not have dictionary (81.8%), they got difficulty to pronounce (60.6%), they got difficulty on vocabulary (72.7%), they got difficulty to translate (63.7%). Most of the students’ problems in learning English reading were on vocabulary. It is because they did not have dictionary and lack of motivation in learning English, especially reading. Therefore, they made efforts to solve the problems, for example: asking someone (teacher and friend) and borrowing or opening dictionary. Its purpose is to understand the text.
