Abstract

English as an international language is important and very useful in our live. English has been taught to the students in Elementary school who are commonly called as young learners. Teaching English to young learners is not the same as to the adult learners. However, the teacher needs to understand about learning strategies and teaching media that facilitate the teaching learning process. This study is focused on describing the use of media in teaching English to the young learners of SDN RSDBI Tunjungsekar I. The research problems were the kinds of media that are used by the teacher in teaching English, the problems faced by the teacher in teaching English in using media, and the teacherÂ’s way to solve the problems. In conducting this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative research design. The subject of this research was the English teacher at the fourth grade of SDN RSDBI Tunjungsekar I. The instruments used by the researcher to collect the data were observation and interview. The result of the research showed that the English teacher at SDN RSDBI Tunjungsekar I used three kinds of media in teaching English to the young learners. They are visual media, audio media, and audio visual media. Visual media included flashcard, realia, and whiteboard. Audio visual media such as LCD Projector that connected with Computer and Sound. The devices in the language laboratory was one of audio media. Those media were very effective and helpful for the teacher and the students. In implementing the media, the teacher faced some problems. (1) The whiteboard is higher than the teacher. It can be overcome by the teacher need cooperation with staff institution to move the whiteboard, so the teacher is easy to use it; (2) the lack of teacherÂ’s ability to use the flashcard especially in moving the flashcards faster. It can be overcome by the teacher should practice how to move the flashcards better before she begins the teaching learning process; (3) the teacher cannot bring the realia of animals to the classroom. It can be overcome by the teacher should provide enough media, so the students can learning many vocabulary of animals; (4) the lack of teacherÂ’s preparation in using headphones, audio and computer in the language laboratory. It can be overcome by the teacher should check the entire devices that want to be used in the language laboratory. So, the teaching learning process can run well; and (5) sometimes the LCD Projector and the audio cannot function well. It can be overcome by the teacher should learning and understanding about operating the LCD Projector and the sound.
