Abstract

There are a lot of English books published in Indonesia today. Since learning English is the matter of playing sounds, using book as the source of learning has some advantages and disadvantages. Written English has no sound, it is only captured by the eyes while sound is something that should be heard by the ear. Thus, to learn English sound in the proper way, sound symbol in the English books are supposed to be recognized in international standard. One of the standards is International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Therefore, the writer wants to analyze on the vowel phonemic transcription as English sound representation used in the selected English books for children based on IPA. This research used descriptive qualitative research design because this research used the data from documents to present the finding. Each book had different chapters and contents. From those chapters, the researcher selected only the contents which had the same title. Finally, one same title selected for this analysis was “Animal”. To do a lot more efficient analysis, the words taken from each title of each book were 20 same words. The result of this study found that from 20 words taken from each book, there were 16 patterns of vowel phonemic transcriptions found based on IPA. From the 16 patterns, there were only six of vowels phonemic transcriptions in the books have near sound representation to the vowel phonemic transcription based on IPA. Furthermore, the vowel phonemic transcription found in the books did not use the theory of vowel phonemic transcription in Bahasa Indonesia itself. To sum up, the transcriptions found in the books may invite different sound production of English because every language has different rule. Since English written is different from its sound, then, transcribing the sound into its rule based on IPA is a must.
