Abstract

Literature is one of the most exciting parts in studying language. By reading literature, the readers not only get enjoyment but also knowledge about human life, human ways of thinking, even about culture or custom of certain country. It gives the readers valuable lessons of life as a reflection of human being with their good and bad deeds. Besides, it can enrich senses of humanity. In this thesis, one of Joel Zwick’s films entitled “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was selected to be analyzed. This study focused on culture shocks faced by the main character of the film, Ian Miller. Therefore, this study was attended to answer the statement of problems. Those were (1) What are the culture shocks experienced by Ian Miller in entering new culture and environment in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” film? (2) How are Ian Miller’s reactions in facing culture shocks in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” film? In analyzing this film, descriptive qualitative research design is used because it did not use hypothesis and statistical methods. The approach in this study was objective approach. The instrument or the data collection method used in this study was popular culture document that was a film. The object of this study was the main character in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” film. The result of this analysis showed that the culture shocks faced by Ian Miller in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” film were: (1) Culture shock of the belief between Ian Miller and his girl friend,Toula Portokalos, and Ian’s reaction was refusing, (2) Culture shock of norm between Ian and Toula’s father, and the reaction of Ian was giving up to debate with Toula’s father, (3) Culture shock of nonverbal behavior between Ian Miller and Toula’s mother, and Ian’s reaction was accepting the behavior after Toula explained the meaning for Greek culture, (4) Culture shock of wedding between Ian Miller and Toula’s parents, and his reaction was accepting the gift by saying “Thank you”.
