Abstract

Literature reflects the human’s life, their problems, and their experiences about life. It contains the beautiful languages. Through literature, people will get pleasure, the lesson about life, and enrich their knowledge. Film is one of literary work that is taken as the object of the study. Film provides the art and entertainment. People can take the lesson and information from the film itself. This study focuses on Ashima Ganguli’s cultural problems between Indian and America in “The Namesake” film. There are three statements of problems in this study, those are; (1) What were the cultural problems between west and east faced by Ashima Ganguli in “The Namesake” film?, (2) What were the effects of cultural problems between west and east for Ashima Ganguli’s life in “The Namesake” film?, (3) How did Ashima Ganguli overcome the cultural problems between west and east in “The Namesake” film?. This study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design because it is intended to find out the concerning Ashima Ganguli’s experiences who faces cultural problems when she moved from India to America in “The Namesake” film. Furthermore, this research uses objective approach because the writer only got the data from watching the film to identify the cultural problems between west and east faced by Ashima Ganguli in Mira NairÂ’s film “The Namesake”. The result of the analysis shows that Ashima Ganguli faced six cultural problems during she lives in America. They are; (1) clothes, (2) the rule of hospital, (3) child’s right, (4) the concept of marriage, (5) the way to greet new people in first meeting, and (6) the way to express love. The effects of those conditions are: (1) uncomfortable, (2) feeling confused, (3) disappointed, and (4) feeling uneasy. Ashima Ganguli’s ways to overcome her cultural problems they are: (1) making accustomed to wear short frock, (2) sharing with her husband about the rule of hospital, (3) accepting the child’s right, (4) asked her son to have an arranged marriage, (5) accepting the difference way to greet someone and (6) Ashima was helped by her husband.
