Abstract

Reading skill is one of the basic skills to learn English. Reading can help student to get information and knowledge that they need. Besides, the teachers must have some techniques to make the students know and understand about the text and also can achieve the goal of learning. The purposes of this study were: (1) to identify the techniques used by the teacher of bilingual class in SMPN 5 Malang in teaching reading, (2) to find out the implementation of the technique in teaching reading in bilingual class at SMPN 5 Malang, and (3) to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the technique in teaching reading in bilingual class at SMPN 5 Malang. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the study was one of the bilingual English teachers at SMPN 5 Malang. Moreover, in collecting the data, the researcher used two instruments. The instruments were observation and interview. The data was analyzed descriptively. The teacher used five kinds of the technique in teaching reading in bilingual class at SMPN 5 Malang. They were reading silently, reading loudly, mapping, skimming and three phase technique. Reading silently technique used by asking the students to read the text silently. Besides, reading loudly technique used by asking the student to read the text loudly. Then, mapping technique used by giving command to the students to draw and described the text in front of the class. Moreover, three phase technique was implemented by the teacher in three stages, they were pre reading, whilst reading, and post reading activities. Mapping technique could enlarge studentsÂ’ knowledge, express ideas, and describe the opinion in map, but it needed many times. Besides, reading aloud technique helped the students to get new vocabularies, develop pronunciations, and the teacher could check the studentsÂ’ pronunciation. Unfortunately, the students who have low confident or lack vocabularies would feel shy to read the text. Then, reading silently technique could enlarge the studentsÂ’ background of knowledge but the teacher could not check the studentsÂ’ pronunciation. Next, skimming technique helped the students to be able to find the information quickly, but it was difficult for junior high school students and it was easier to make mistakes. Finally, three phase technique could make the students to get the information and enlarge knowledge easier. In fact, it made the students need much time.
