Abstract

Vocabulary is the meaning of words in a sentence, and more particularly the body of words known as an individual teaching. The purposes of this study were: (1) to know the techniques used by English teacher in teaching vocabulary to the third grade students of SD Muhammadyah Magetan, (2) to describe the procedure how the teacher applied those techniques in teaching vocabulary to the third students of SD Muhammadyah Magetan, (3) to describe advantages and the disadvantages used by English teacher in teaching vocabulary to the third grade students of SD Muhammadyah Magetan. The research design of the study was descriptive research. The subject of this study was an English teacher for third grade students at SD Muhammadyah Magetan.In this research, the writer used observation, interview, the data was analyzed descriptively. The teacher used five kinds of the technique in teaching vocabulary for the third grade students of SD Muhammadyah Magetan. They were drilling, translation, game, song and explanation techniques. The teacher implemented drilling technique by reading the words first then asked the students to repeat the words. She also implemented translation technique by translating the words in Bahasa Indonesia. Then, she also implemented game technique, by using whisper message game. Moreover, song technique was implemented by singing song. The last was explanation technique. The teacher explained the words by using synonim and the meaning of the words. Each techniques had the advantages and the disadvantages. Moreover, drilling technique had advantages, the students more interested in drilling the words together and they were more active in the class. Unfortunately, it needed many times and sometimes students feel bored to drill. Besides, translation technique was more practice and understandable for students because they did not always open the dictionary. On the other hand, this technique also had the disadvantages for the students were passive in the class. Then, made student more interesting, active in the class and feel happy and enjoy following the game. disadvantages it was need a lot of time and difficult to control the studentÂ’s activity. The next, song technique. It was more interesting, made students more confidence in the class and make them feel happy and enjoy sing a song together with the action. Unfortunately, it needed many times. The last was explanation technique, it could make the students more understand with the material that given by the teacher. In fact, this technique made the teacher need much time to explain the material.
