Abstract

Reading is a process or a step of interaction between the reader and the writerÂ’s idea. Based on the Standard of Competency and Basic Competencies of reading subject, there are three text types that should be taught to the Second Grade of Junior High Students, those are descriptive, narrative, and recount texts. Recount is a text which retells a series of events, usually occur in the past. This study was done to find out the difficulties faced by the second grade of junior high students in comprehending recount texts and the factors causing the difficulties faced by the Second Grade of Junior High Students in comprehending recount texts. The research design used in this study was survey research. The population was 287 students and has 8 classes. Each class consisted of 36 students. This study took 2 classes (class D and class H) randomly as the sample. The instruments used reading test and questionnaire. The research finding shows that the highest difficulty faced by the students was about poor comprehension and less information about text that was 71% (51 students). The average difficulty faced by the students found in huge deficit in reading that was 35% (26 students). Then, the lowest difficulty faced by the students found in poor recognition of words at sight that was 34% (25 students). From 72 students there were 37 students (51%) pass the test and they could achieve the Standard of Achivement (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum). Then, 35 students (49%) could not pass the test because their score less than 67. The factors causing difficulties in comprehending recount texs was include less knowledge of recount texts,lack of motivation to read the texts, difficulty to understand the characteristics of recount texts, low vocabulary, anddifficulty to understand the whole content of recount texts.
