Abstract

Language plays an important role in serving human affairs. In general, the value of language is to share knowledge, ideas, and beliefs. Speech acts give people an idea about the power of language. It allows people to realize that they can perform many communicative functions by means of the language, for instance suggesting someone, ordering someone to do something, express feeling to someone and many more. Therefore this research was focused on the second dimension of speech acts that is illocutionary acts. It is because illocutionary acts can be classified into several kinds and each kind has a function and a purpose meaning. The researcher choose “Jerry Maguire” movie as a research analysis because it has some lessons, knowledge, experience and some chemistry of main characters for the viewers. The main characters wanted to show that they could share anything with the viewers. This study is aimed at analyzing an analysis of assertive and expressive of the main illocutionary acts characters speech act in Jerry Maguire’s movie. It answered the following research problem: 1) what is an analysis of expressive of the main characters speech act in Jerry Maguire’s movie, 2) what is an analysis of assertive of the main characters speech act in Jerry Maguire’s movie. This study used qualitative research to know the types of illocutionary acts. The research object of this study is Jerry Maguire and friends. This study analyzed of assertive and expressive speech act by seeing the conversations among the main characters which are dealing with illocutionary acts. The results of this study showed that there were two types of illocutionary speech acts found in the conversation among the main characters, they are 29 utterances that can be classified into assertive speech act and 21 utterances that can be classified into expressive speech act. The researcher found that the most dominant utterance kind of speech act used by Jerry Maguire in “Jerry Maguire” movie was assertive speech act. It was proven by frequency, that assertive speech act was used 29 times, which was the highest number.
