Abstract

This study is intended to identify the types of English sentences in reading passages and the types of English sentences are mostly used in reading passages of reading textbook “MODUL” course book (second semester) published by Graha Ilmu Mulia used by the sixth grade students of elementary school in Kecamatan Banyuputih Situbondo This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, because this study describes and analysis the types of sentence patterns used in reading passages. The subject of this study is “MODUL” course book (second semester) for Elementary School of the Sixth Grade. There are six reading passages in the course book, and the researcher takes all reading passages as data. And the instrument uses in conducting this research is human instrument. The result of this study shows that there were three types of sentences used in reading passages; they were those types of sentences except for compound-complex sentence. And the type of English sentence mostly used was simple sentence. It could be seen that from six reading passages there were 110 sentences, and 100 sentences or 90,9% were simple sentences, 4 sentences were compound sentences, and 6 sentences were complex sentences. And there were four reading passages belong to descriptive text, one reading passage was recount text and one reading passage was narrative text. Also, all sentences tend to function as declarative because this text is designed for elementary school students to make them easier in understanding texts. In conclusion, simple sentence often appears in reading passages, usually reading passages of Elementary school. Because the course book is designed for Sixth Grade of Elementary level and the use of simple sentences in the reading passage is appropriate for the students to comprehend easily and communicate clearly.
