Abstract

Film is one of the media that contains sounds, video, animation, picture, etc. Film does not only give us entertainment but also convey messages to the audiences. The film-makers often have a mission in the films that they make. They often insert conflict and new experience into the film so that audiences can learn from it. There are many people who are interested in film because it is supposed to be an image of real world. In this study, the writer is interested in analyzing the social conflict found in “The Freedom Writers” film. In detail, the purposes of this study are (1) to know social conflict faced by Erin Gruwell as the main character in “The Freedom Writers” film, (2) to know the causes of social conflicts faced by Erin Gruwell in “The Freedom Writers” film, and (3) to know the effect of social conflicts toward her life. This study used descriptive qualitative research design because the writer described and interpreted the phenomena that existed in the film.The object of the study was “The Freedom Writers” film. Moreover, objective approach employed because the writer wanted to analyze Erin Gruwell’s social conflict as a main character in this film. The result of this study showed that social conflicts found in “The Freedom Writers” were: (1) conflict between Erin with her husband, Scott, (2) Erin with her father, Steve, (3) Erin with her student, Eva, (4) Erin with Ms. Campbell. Moreover, the causes of the social conflicts found in the film were categorized into three factors. Firstly, differences of idealism, interpretation, and thought. Secondly, the difference various of the background of culture. The last is the difference goals among person and groups. Some causes of conflict were categorized as differences of idealism, interpretation, and thought. Meanwhile, in “The Freedom Writers” film the conflict that faced by Erin Gruwell give positive and negative effects toward her life.The positive effects are: firstly, Erin’s father support and motivates Erin when she is sad while facing her problem with Scott. Secondly, Erin’s father gives Erin permission to continue her job as an English teacher. Thirdly, the relationship between Erin and Eva get closer and more intense, like mother and daughter. While, the negative effects are: Scott does not support Erin’s job as an English teacher and they then decide to divorce.
