Abstract

Sociolinguistics is the study of language in its social contexts and the study of social life through linguistics. Sociolinguistics also discusses the variation in language or variation within speech communities. One of the variations in sociolinguistics is slang. Slang is informal and often ephemeral linguistic forms, and used below the level of stylistically neutral language usage. With slang people can make fun in their conversations, ease in social intercourse, and to be secret or not to be understood by anyone else. In this study, the writer focuses on slang words and slang expressions in the script of “American Gangster” Movie. This is chosen because in the movie there are kinds of slang used by the main characters in their dialogues. There are two problems analyzed by the writer: (1) What are the words and the expressions of slang used by the main characters in “American Gangster” movie, and (2) What are the meanings of the slang words and expressions used by the main characters in “American Gangster” movie?. Research design is the strategy used by the researcher to collect and analyze the research data. This study used the descriptive qualitative research, because the data collected in the form of words, not in number. The object of this study is the “American Gangster” movie. The writer analyzes the data from the conversations of the main characters in the movie. The result of this thesis shows that there are 20 slang words and 87 slang expressions found in “American Gangster” movie. The slangs are used in a conversation by the main characters in informal situation and sometimes also used in formal situation. There are some of slang words usually repeated in other expressions, but they have different meanings.
