Abstract

Online shopping is a business transaction using internet. As the technology is well-developed, social networking like Facebook contributes to the advancement of online shops in which people can broaden their social connection as well as take opportunity to earn money by online shopping. For it is free of charge, people are interested in advertising their products through Facebook. Obviously, online shopping through Facebook functioning figurative language is used to make the sentence sounds more beautiful, unique, fun and friendly and to influence the buyers to buy more and This study employed descriptive qualitative design aiming at (1) investigating kinds of figurative language used on Facebook Online Shopping, and (2) investigating the meaning of figurative language used on Facebook Online Shopping. The data were collected from some advertisements published on Facebook Online Shopping on May, 2012. The findings showed that there were only four kinds of figurative language frequently used on Facebook Online Shopping on May, 2012. The result indicated that there were 9 hyperboles, 1 personification, 4 idioms and 1 euphemism found in the advertisement. Each of them had their own function on the language to emphasize the meaning. For example, hyperboles are used to exaggerate quality of the products, personification and metaphor are used to beautify the products, idioms are to vary the diction in ads, and euphemism is to soften the ads. Based on the result of this study, the writer suggests that further researchers in language study have study on the use of figurative language in other internet networking, such as Kaskus, Twitter and Blogs.
