Abstract

Motivation was a force that provides support and instruction for learners to learn and achieve their goals. There were two generic classes of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation was a motivation from external factors such as reward and punishment. Intrinsic motivation was a motivation from internal factors such as self-determination and personal choice, optimal experience and flow, interest, and cognitive engagement and self-responsibility. This study tried to find the dominant motivation between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and also the teachers' ways to increase the students' motivation in English learning. In this study, the writer mixed quantitative and qualitative research design because the data were collected in numerical and narrative form. The data were collected from the students by using questionnaire and the teacher by using interview. Besides, the population in this study was the first grade students consisting of two classes and also the English teacher of MA Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. The writer took all population to became sample. The sampling technique used here was saturation sampling (sampling jenuh). The result of this study showed that intrinsic motivation was more dominant than extrinsic motivation. It could be seen the mean score of extrinsic motivation. It was 21 and intrinsic motivation was 30, 4. Then, the teacher applied some ways to increase their students' motivation by giving inspiration, making good atmosphere, helping the students to solve their academic problems and monitoring their progress, increasing the students' effort and persistence, letting the students to choose the topic and asking them to make or bring things that they liked, using many kinds of media, using discussion techniques, and giving punishment and showing the students' value.
