Abstract

A game provides comfortable and fun in teaching learning process. The researcher has chosen the vocab snake game as an alternative way for the teacher to teach vocabulary. This research is made to answers (1) What is the teacherÂ’s procedure in applying the vocab snake game in teaching vocabulary to the first year students in SMPN 4 Magetan? (2) What are the strengths of using vocab snake game in teaching vocabulary to the first year students of SMPN 4 Magetan? (3) What are the weaknesses of using the vocab snake game in teaching vocabulary to the first year students of SMPN 4 Magetan? Therefore, the researcher describes about the teacherÂ’s procedure, the strengths and the weaknesses of using the vocab snake game in teaching vocabulary. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. To get the data and information, the researcher uses observation and interview as the instruments. The subject of research is the teacher of English who teaches the first year students of SMPN 4 Magetan. In this reasons, the researcher attempts to describe the teacherÂ’s procedure, the strengths and the weaknesses of applying the game in teaching English especially teaching vocabulary. The result of this research showed the teacherÂ’s procedure in applying the vocab snake game in teaching vocabulary. She introduced and gave the example of the game to the students. Then, the teacher asked the students to prepare the stuff (pencil/ballpoint) and commanded to start the game. In the last, the teacher and the students discussed together the answers of the game. Besides, there were some strengths and weaknesses of using the vocab snake game. The strengths were the game was interesting for the students to learn vocabulary seriously, motivated the students to learn actively and helped them to remember vocabulary. The weaknesses were the teacher had difficulty to give score and she could not manage the time.
