Abstract

Code switching is the alternate use of two languages or linguistic varieties within the same utterance or during the same conversation. Nowadays, code switching has been already used by many people. It can be found in movies, magazines, novels, host utterances, songs, and also in teachersÂ’ communication in teaching. This study aimed to analyze code switching employed by EYL teacher in English class of SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang. It answered the following research problems: 1) What are the types of code-switching used by EYL teacher in the teaching of English at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang?. 2) What are the EYL teacherÂ’s reasons of using code switching from English to Indonesian or Javanese in teaching English at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang?. The purposes of this study are to find the types of code switching in teaching English at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang; and the reasons of using code switching from English to Indonesian or Javanese in teaching English at SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design to obtain the data. The subject of this study was an English teacher who employed code switching in teaching English. The instruments of this study were observation and interview. Also, the researcher used recorder as the supporting media to collect the data. In this study the researcher found 65 sentences include of code switching employed by EYL teacher in English class of SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang. The result of this study showed that: The researcher found 6 types of code switching employed by the EYL teacher. 1) Intra-sentential switches, it was found 24 sentences. 2) Inter-sentential, it was found 30 sentences. 3) Involving a word within a sentence, it was found 2 sentences. 4) Establish continuity with the previous speaker, it was found 1 sentence. 5) Emblematic switching, it was found 7 sentences. 6) Changing of pronunciation features of code switching, it was found only 1 sentence. The most dominant types of code switching employed by EYL teacher is Inter-sentential. From seven reasons of the using code switching proposed by Hoffmann (1991:116), teacher stated that he used six of them. However, researcher found that all of the reasons were used by the teacher in teaching English of SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang. They are: 1) Talking about a particular topic, 2) Quoting somebody else, the teacher noted that he never applied code switching based on quoting somebody else reasons. However, the researcher found 1 sentence called quoting somebody else in the classroom observation. 3) Being emphatic about something, 4) Interjection, 5) Repetition used for clarification, 6) Expressing group identity, 7) Clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor.
