Abstract

Learning English is not easy for the students of elementary school if they have limited number of vocabulary. Thus, extended activities in the form of guessing games is vital in developing the communicative ability of the learners. In guessing games, the students will be given a lot of opportunity to use English to talk so that they will add their vocabulary. In this research, the problem is formulated as follows, “Does teaching vocabulary using guessing games improve the fourth year students’ vocabulary achievement at SD Negeri 3 KratonKencongJember?” Thus, this study is extended to know whether teaching vocabulary using guessing games improves the fourth year students’ vocabulary achievement at SD Negeri 3 KratonKencongJember. The design in this research was a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group was given a treatment by using guessing games in teaching vocabulary and the control group was treated without guessing games. This study took the fourth year students as population, namely 4A and 4B, both of them consisted of 56 students. The writer took all the students as the population. The instrument used to collect the data was a vocabulary test. After all the data were analyzed using Anova, it was found that F value was greater than F table (4.647 > 2.689) at .05 level of signifcance, so the Ho (null hypothesis) was rejected. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. This result implies that teaching vocabulary to the fourth year students of SD Negeri 3 KratonKencongJember using guessing games can improve their vocabulary achievement.
