Abstract

English includes four skills; writing, reading, listening and speaking. Basically, speaking is very essential skill to be reached. In fact, teaching speaking is not easy so that the technique is affecting in teaching speaking, because technique will be helpful and acceptable for the students to improve speaking skill. This study focused on the technique of teaching speaking implemented by the English teacher to the tenth graders in Marketing Department at SMKN Mojoagung Jombang. The purposes of the study were (1) to describe the techniques implemented by English teacher to teach speaking to the first graders in Marketing Department at SMKN Mojoagung Jombang, (2) to identify the problems faced by the teacher in implementing the techniques, and (3) to find some ways in solving the problems faced by the teacher in implementing the techniques of teaching speaking to the first graders in Marketing Department at SMKN Mojoagung Jombang. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study was the English teacher who taught English in Marketing Department at SMKN Mojoagung Jombang. Moreover, in collecting the data, the researcher used two instruments. The instruments were observation and interview. The data was analyzed descriptively. Based on the research findings, the teacher implemented four techniques in teaching speaking to the tenth graders in Marketing Department at SMKN Mojoagung Jombang. They were lecturing, small talk, discussion, and role play. The researcher also found two problems faced by the teacher in implementing the techniques. The first problem was the teacher got the difficulty in motivating the students to engage the classroom activities and he could not manage the time. In solving those problems, the teacher gave plus (+) score as a reward for the students who were brave to practice in front of class. Then, usually the teacher continued the activity to the next meeting because he had to reach out all the material that cannot be finished yet in the meeting.
